Just Add Ink #13 - A Colour Challenge!

Hi everyone!

Now, before we get into this weeks challenge I would like to address something that came up last week - some of you have noted that we have a new 'rule' in our list of rules last week - projects must be exclusive to Just Add Ink.

We feel we're pretty flexible with the rules here at Just Add Ink, we want to keep it that way too so that we have a huge range of entries that vary because of the unique talents of each and every one of you. And ... to be brutally frank, we don't want people entering for the sole purpose of having 'another random challenge site' on their long, long, long list of challenges their card is applicable to. I'm guessing you know where I'm going with that.

So ... on that note we would like to clarify this rule: we don't mind if you put your card together using 2 challenges (e.g. a sketch challenge and a colour challenge combined). This is, after all, a brilliant idea. But if you are one of those people with a long list, your entry will be deleted.

If you would like to give us some feedback on this issue please leave us a comment.

On with the fun!
This weeks challenge is...

Rules:
  • If you don't have the exact colors it's still OK to enter using something similar! :)
  • Make a papercraft project - a card, scrapbook layout, 3d object, etc.
  • While the DT uses Stampin' Up! products where possible, you're welcome to use any products you like.
  • Please use the keyword JAI13 when uploading to public galleries.
  • Please mention our challenge and provide a link with your post, so others can come and join in the fun too!
  • Provide a DIRECT LINK to the post on your blog where you've displayed your creation using Mr. Linky. Incorrect links, or blog links that are down-right advertising are not eligible for Top 5 picks, and will be deleted.
  • Projects must be new and exclusive to Just Add Ink.
And here's what our amazing Design Team came up with this week:

Hi Inkers!

It's been a busy week here at Just Add Ink, so in case you haven't seen the wonderful features Danielle has put together since the last challenge, you'll see she's been kind enough to share a tutorial on how she made her divine Top Note Box by clicking here or read the 'While the Glue is Drying' feature on our fabulous design team member Sarah Klass by clicking here.

I think you'll find both features rather inspiring, thanks Danielle for putting them together for us all to enjoy.

Profile of a Stamper - Sarah Klass

Name
Sarah Klass

Location
Perth, WA

Any jobs other than crafter
Mum of two precious angels!

Favourite craft type/style
I don’t think I have a style. I waver between clean and simple and more involved stuff when I have the time/inclination.

How did you get started in crafting?
I’ve always loved pretty papers and collected them as a girl. Never used them, just liked to ‘own’ them. Nothing much has changed!
I started getting into paper crafting when I made my wedding invitations in 2001 using a scalpel blade and a metal ruler to cut them, believe it or not! Purchase of a paper trimmer followed soon after J
Then there were the cards that involved nothing more than a base and some punched flowers, that at the time I thought were the height of sophistication and creativity!

What made you interested in stamping/card making/scrapbooking?
Stamping - I love that I can create gorgeous images without the need to draw them first!
Card making – I believe that absolutely nothing beats a handmade card, and I couldn’t tell you the last time I bought one instead of making it. ‘Just because’ cards are my favourite kind to make and send J
Scrapbooking – I love that I can record special moments and even everyday moments in a way that is enjoyable to do and more so to look at over and over. My kids love their scrapbook pages, which makes me love doing it even more.

How often do you stamp/scrap?
As often as possible! Probably every second day on average. I don’t scrap as much as I’d like to but am working to change that...

Where do you get your inspiration? Are you inspired by anyone in particular?
Everywhere! I often take inspiration from fellow crafters but not necessarily by CASE-ing a whole project. I take note of little details that I like individually and use them when they fit what I’m creating.
I am inspired by colour combinations that I see everyday and I view the world according to the colour families, but then again, doesn’t everybody?!

What’s your favourite technique to use?
Ooh, I don’t think I have one! I tend to have an extended play with a particular technique for a while, and then I’ll find another one and have a good go at that.

What tip/s would you give to other crafters?
Just STAMP! I know what it’s like to hit a creative wall and it happens to us all, but when it does, CASE projects that you like and that are sure to turn out well so that you get your confidence back.

Big Shot Tutorial - Top Note Box

I shared this box on my blog, and today I'm sharing a step by step tutorial on how to make it.  I want to be really clear - I didn't design this!  There are lots of variations of this box on the internet, I've just re-done this in centimetres rather than inches.

Big Shot Tutorial
Top Note Box

Supplies:
Big Shot
Top Note Die
Horizontal Slot punch
Adhesives
Ribbon
2 pieces of card stock -
  • 1 cut to 14cm x 20.5cm
  • 1 A5 size/half an A4 sheet (15cm x 21cm) scored down the centre to make an ordinary sized card (15cm x 10.5cm)

Step One
Score your 14cm x 20.5cm piece of cardstock.
On the long side, score at 2.5cm, 9cm, 11.5cm, and 18cm.
On the short side, score at 2.5cm and 11.5cm.
Step Two
After scoring, cut the score lines along the long sides up to the 2.5cm score line (this will make the tabs that will hold the box together).
Step Three
On one side, glue four of the tabs (to the inside) to form a basic box.
On the other side, glue the remaining two tabs (to the inside) to form the top of the box.
As shown in photo.
Step Four
To make the Top Note top and base for your box, you need to run a folded card through the Big Shot.
Lay your folded card on the Top Note Die so the score line sits just below the perforation marks on one side.
Run through your Big Shot - this is how it will look when it comes out.
Step Five
Cut the card in half on the score line.
You now have your top and bottom panels for your box.
If you want to stamp or embellish your panels, now is the time to do it.
Step Six
Use the Hoizontal Slot punch to punch slots on the outer edge for the ribbon to go through.
Attach the top and base panels to your box - I've used Tombow glue.
The top panel should go on the part of the box that only has two tabs attached as the box will open and close more easily this way.
Step Seven
Use Sticky Strip or Snail Adhesive to attach your ribbon to the back edge of the box.
Leave the rest of the ribbon unglued.
Add any extra embellishments.

You're finished!

Finished Top Note Box

I hope you found this tutorial useful!  We'd love to see your Top Note Boxes, so feel free to leave a comment with a direct link to your creation.
